CASE
The Global Service Jam is an event to share and develop ideas on service innovation. During a weekend, participants in more than 200 cities around the world team up to work on a global topic (revealed at the beginning of the conference).
GSJ 2016 focused on care and responsible consumption of natural resources. We had 48 hours to change the way energy is consumed on an everyday basis.
SOLUTION
SAVERS encourages citizens to save energy and environmental resources by connecting their energy rate to a saving account for a social project of their interest. The energy saved is transferred as monetary savings to that bank account.
CONCEPT
SAVERS is a service for raising awareness on the importance of the responsible use of environmental resources. It turns saved energy into money savings that are transferred to a social issue chosen by the user. Different users can share the same goals and join forces for a common cause with an environmental approach.
CONSUME: According to the average energy expenditure of the consumer (Saver), a monthly fee on energy consumption is set.
SAVE: Each month, the difference between the consumption price and the established fee will be transferred to a savings account for a social project chosen by the Saver.
IMPROVE: The Saver will be able to consult (in a web platform or app) the evolution of the savings, together with tips on how to increase those savings based on their consumption habits.
48 HOURS TO MAKE AN IMPACT
Friday. 18.30 - 21.00. Problem presentation. Mapping concepts and challenges within the energy consumption framework for a better problem picture.
Saturday. 10.30 - 14.00. Field work. To investigate the triggers that motivate people to take care of the environment, we conducted a series of short interviews with potential users.
Saturday. 15.30 - 18.30. Research analysis. ‘People only raise awareness of the environment to the people they have some power over’ was our main insight. Therefore, we wondered ‘How might we empower people to raise anyone’s awareness of environment?’
Saturday. 18.30 - 21.00. Ideation. Based on our main insight and the brief, we shaped a service in which saving environmental resources turned into money savings.
Sunday. 10.30 - 13.00. Prototyping. A prototype testing made us aware of the issues with the access to user’s bank accounts and that it did not respond to our insights. So we iterated: a service offered by an electric company to collaboratively support a social cause by saving energy.
Sunday. 13.00 - 15.00. Service presentation. A video prototype of the service helped us to introduce our proposal to the rest of participants.
